The New York Aquarium

The New York Aquarium is the oldest aquarium that is still continually operating in the United States. It occupies 14 acres and boasts over 350 species of aquatic wildlife. Before it moved to the boardwalk in Coney Island in 1957, Brooklyn it was opened in Castle Garden in Battery Park, Manhattan in 1896. The aquarium belongs to an integrated system of four zoos and one aquarium which is managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society . |
The New York Aquarium opened on December 10, 1896 at Castle Garden in Battery Park. On October 31, 1902, it housed only 150 specimens of wildlife. Over time, it enlarged the collections considerably by the distinguished zoologist Charles Haskins Townsend.
The New York Aquarium was damaged by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 significantly. It partially reopened on May 25, 2013.
